Joanne B Kaar – Weaving with Grass
I was firstly inspired by the exhibition of Angus MacPhee showing grass sculptures made from natural fibres without a pattern.  I was delighted to be given the opportunity to attend this workshop with like minded people.  I am an art student at UHI based at Taigh Chearsabhagh, North Uist and am interested in traditional crafts and culture.

Joanne was a great teacher inspiring creativity with the material in addition to the best methods to use with each different fibre.  The first day was experimentation to get a feel for the fibres and learn various methods.  Although there were different levels of ability everyone had a fun time and learned what worked best for them.  On Wednesday we all made a shoe from the grasses available.  Most were more suited to South Sea Islands not the Hebrides but we all produced at least one wearable form of footwear!

I would certainly like to attend similar workshops as they gave me lots of ideas for future projects and met lovely people to share creative practice.
