Shift is a project that brings together a diverse group of Scottish and Icelandic designers and makers to talk, explore and inspire one another. Coming together through a series of exhibitions and activities, they will investigate one another’s location, environment, influences, skills, experience, materials and techniques. Through discussion and experimentation each participant will consider how this has stimulated a shift in the emphasis, direction or focus of their practice. This project is a catalyst for fresh ideas, new approaches to creative production, making contact with new audiences and markets and fostering a deeper connection between cultures.
Year 1: DesignMarch 2017, Reykjavik and XpoNorth June 2017, Inverness
The Highlands and Islands makers will travel to Iceland in March, and then the Icelandic makers travel to Scotland in June, and working in collaborative pairs they will use this time to explore new ideas, develop contacts and ultimately to create new work for Year 2 of the project.
In 2017 we will bring the groups together to meet, to get to know one another and start to foster links. Our activity will be centered around an exhibition of all participants existing work at DesignMarch in Reykjavik and this work will then travel to XpoNorth in Inverness.
Alongside the showcase at XpoNorth we will be hosting a discussion panel on the Icelandic markets as well as a keynote talk on DesignMarch. More details on our XpoNorth programme will be added soon!
An exhibition of work will be on display at Gallerí Grótta in Reykjavík from 23 March – 22 April 2017 (Private view is on 22 March from 5pm – 7pm)

Year 2 DesignMarch 2018 and exhibition tour
In the second year we plan to exhibit the new work that has been been created as a result of the collaborative process. The work might be jointly developed by project partners, or it might be simply inspired through shifts in thinking. We are currently working on funding applications to support the development of new work and then the subsequent exhibition tour, beginning at DesignMarch 2018 and then travelling to a range of venues across Scotland.
